Temple Mount Destruction
A major controversy is brewing on the world’s most controversial plot of land, the Temple Mount. A construction trench, dug by the Waqf—the Muslim religious trust that manages the complex—has enraged archaeologists and others concerned with the preservation of antiquities. Advocates are particularly disturbed by the indiscriminate use of a backhoe, which will—and has—caused serious damage to the artifact-rich site.
Read exclusive eyewitness testimony, a report of a follow-up visit, photos and videos, Hershel Shanks’s op-ed, and browse worldwide media coverage of this ongoing destruction. Also, a recent report by Nadav Shragai, a Haaretz reporter who has been following the story, details deliberate destruction of antiquities by the Waqf—with the quiet acquiescence of Israeli authorities.
