Picking a leader has never been easy. What qualifies a person to lead? Experience? Youthful vigor? Heroism in battle? The ability to make peace? As Americans debate these issues, BAR looks back to the Bible for some insight. In the Book of Samuel, God has his prophet Samuel anoint Saul as king of Israel—and then, during Saul’s life, commands Samuel to anoint a new leader, an unknown young man named David. The dynamic of two anointed leaders—one a seasoned veteran, the other a talented rising star—quickly led to a major political crisis.
