Dear Friend,

Take a journey into the Biblical past of Egypt and Israel with the Biblical Archaeology Society.

Image Description: Egypt        Join us for Egypt: Land of Legends and Mysteries, taking place January 10-25, 2010. This is the chance to explore the Biblical side of Egypt led by Dr. Chahinda Karim of The American University in Cairo. Personalized for Biblical archaeology scholars and enthusiasts, our unique 16-day tour explores the land of pharaohs and kings, prophets and patriarchs as travelers visit the places so central to the Bible and Western civilization.

Travelers will journey to ancient monasteries--St. Catherine's and the newly restored Red Monastery--the Temple of Seti I and Ramses II (possibly the Pharaoh of the Exodus) at Abydos, the ancient city of el-Amarna and the tombs at Beni Hassan. Of course, central to any tour of Egypt are visits to: the Valley of the Kings, Villages of the Nobles and workers, and the Luxor Temple.

Discover the Biblical side of Egypt

Your journey begins with a full-day symposium on Akhenaten with Dr. Chahinda Karim, your scholar-guide. A professor at The American University in Cairo, Dr. Karim is uniquely qualified as the only Egyptian scholar credentialed as a guide who can lecture on-site, giving meaning and depth to the experience with additional informative lectures and accessibility throughout the tour.

Plus, dig into the science of archaeology with cutting-edge archaeologist Dr. Ray Johnson of the Chicago House in Luxor, who is presently working at the Luxor Temple. Travelers will also hear from Dr. John Swanson of the American University in Cairo, who will analyze modern Egypt.

Some highlights will include walking the wind-swept streets of Caesarea, where the ancient world's largest artificial harbor attests to the extraordinary achievements of Roman-style engineering. From your perch among the hilltop ruins of the Masada fortress, relive one of the most dramatic conflicts in history, where a small group of Jewish Zealots defied an entire Roman legion. You will marvel at the beauty of Sepphoris, the "Glory of Galilee," feel the Old Testament come alive at Megiddo, and trace the early life of Jesus as you journey through Nazareth. An exploration of the mysteries of Jerusalem and the City of David will culminate in a journey to the city's foundation--literally--as you descend through millennia into the ancient water system that fed the Siloam Pool.

Your expert scholar-guide Amnon Wallenstein will bring ancient Israel to life before your eyes with his dynamic narrative and fantastic breadth of knowledge. His extensive knowledge of his country's history combines with his vast experience on numerous archaeological digs to give him an incredibly rich store of information, which he draws on in order to weave his engaging narratives.
