ARCHAEOLOGY ADDING TO THE POWDER KEG
David Ilan discusses excavations at the City of David
In the current issue of BAR, David Ilan, director of the Nelson Glueck School of Biblical Archaeology at Hebrew Union College, Jerusalem, weighs in on the political controversy surrounding excavations at the City of David National Park. The problem, he argues, is that unlike other national parks, the City of David is managed by a right-wing organization called Elad, whose chief goal is the Judaization of east Jerusalem. While he concedes that Elad has raised a great deal of money to fund archaeological work, Ilan asserts that it is inappropriate for such an organization to be given administrative rights over a national park, and that their use of archaeology to further their overtly political agenda only increases the potential for conflict and violence.

We are already getting excited about our ever-popular Digs issue for 2009, and we’d like your help deciding on the cover image. Simply take a look at the three possibilities we’ve posted, and vote for your favorite by midnight tonight, November 19. The winning photo will be the cover of our January/February issue, in which we’ll announce excavation projects that are looking for volunteers next summer.
