Who Wrote the Bible?

The Bible is made up of dozens of books, but tradition has it that the first five books were dictated to Moses, by God. But could Moses have really written down the words that God spoke, including the Ten Commandments? The Bible says that millions of people witnessed this event—but what does archaeology say?

Who wrote the Bible

Pasquel — USA (7/4/2011 12:48:44 AM)

I have always believed Moses wrote the Pentateuch. I was unaware of the two versions of the creation story in Genesis. I will have to investigate that… Whether the bible was written by one author or many, the message is unified throughout the Old and New testaments.

I Disagree (continued)

Drew Walker — America (5/9/2011 11:21:04 PM)

We must research the Bible's history and not be afraid of any truths that might be concluded from our studies. Sometimes we don't want to accept either one of two theories, so we decide to not decide on either. If you want to know the Bible, do not dismiss its history and/or research. We must press forward as Christians and archaeologists.

I Disagree (continued)

Drew Walker — America (5/9/2011 11:17:19 PM)

We will surely never be able to say that we have hard evidence in our possession that proves whether or not the books were inspired by God, but perhaps, with time and diligent research, we will be able to agree on a theory of the Bible-writers. So Justin, do the things our Bible heroes did (wrote) not important to you? I hope I am not simply taking the position of an atheistic historian only concerned with the history, but we mujst know about the things we put our souls on the line for.

I Disagree (continued)

Drew Walker — America (5/9/2011 11:11:01 PM)

We must have a solid truth that we can agree on to be united. Truth is not determined by belief, but by facts, and the facts on the books of the law and the books of history can have their truths exposed by due process of studying the texts through archaeology. Wether or not the text was inspired by the Hebrew Yehweh is strictly a matter of belief. Things so closely related to divinity cannot be proven nor disproven, but some of the works surrounding them can.

I Disagree (continued)

Drew Walker — America (5/9/2011 11:03:36 PM)

To further my point, I believe it IS important that we as archaeologists and followers of the Way know the history of our Holy Scriptures if we have a desire knowledge of what we believe. Sure, wether it is divinely-inspired or not is up to us, in the eye of the beholder. But that's belief. Everyone has different beliefs. We need a common FACT. Our hypothesis on religious must be in agreement somewhere to aid in bringing different denominations together.

I Disagree

Drew Walker — America (5/9/2011 10:58:49 PM)

I disagree with Justin concerning his comment about this being made to "make money off Jesus". I believe this short documentary and part of "The Naked Archaeologist" series assisted me in my understanding of the religious text I read for guidance. I believe that one can further comprehend the materials they are studying having an understanding of its origins.

Evidence

Justin — (4/9/2011 8:28:52 PM)

There comes a time when a "seeker"(for christ) will have to go deeper than just the scientific evidence, they will have to realize facts arent truth. western society believes cave men were hairy guys that went around and beat there wives and lived with skeletons in there caves. the only evidence we have of cave men is a drawing of a reindeer in a cave. youll have to try and look for truth not have a foundation made of facts. look how far facts have gotten us lost.

MONEY

Justin — United States (4/9/2011 8:18:55 PM)

The only questions I ask myself after seeing this page: Another way to make money of the bible? really? this is getting old, offensive, and insulting. best of luck to the show making more money off Jesus! way to go!... NOT!

steven b — us (2/3/2011 10:03:57 AM)

Why is BAR associating itself with this non-archaeologist, this non-scientist, who is already so much more exposed to the public, so much better marketed and sold, than any actual archaeologist, and has done so much to spread misinformation and hinder the work of actual archaeologists, textual critics and historians?

Docu Hypoth

Dr. David Tee — (1/23/2011 2:53:29 AM)

How is it that the be;ievers in the D. H. can believe such sources exist, even though there is not one shred of evidence thatthey ever did, then turn around and donot believe in a historical Jesus which has more evidence than the D.H.? Jesus believed and stated that Moses wrote the G.E.D.N.L. so how can human scholars 3,500 years after the fact say he didn't. it is a convenient excuse to claim that moses & the Is. were illiterate especially when Moses was educated in the Pharaoh's house.

Did Moses write the Torah?

Rev. Dr. Samuel Sostre — 001 (1/20/2011 7:38:32 PM)

Is it me or is there a lack of logic in this program? The Naked Archeologist wanted to determine whether Moses had actually written the Torah. Another alternative is that he transmitted the stories orally and other people wrote them. How does documenting that the scribes during the past 2600 years have been accurate in their copying prove that it was Moses who penned the Torah? Of course I have a question: was there a Hebrew alphabet at the time of Moses? Could Moses write Hebrew 3500 years ago?

fatal flaw?

noam — (1/14/2011 7:16:03 PM)

you finish by saying that the fact that a sentence was found that predates the 'editor' by 100 years is a fatal flaw in the documentary hypothesis. That makes no sense! yes, there are older parts. we covered that already. some were copied some were changed... Good research. I venture to say that 9 out of 10 ppl would have concluded that the torah is not divine which makes me suspect that you started with the premise that it is. it is a hard premise to get off of. I used to be in the same boat.

accuracy of bible

Wade — USA (1/13/2011 6:37:40 PM)

The archaeologist in the video said the Dead Sea Scrolls were "almost" the same. He didn't say they were the same. What does it accomplish for anyone to say Moses did not write the Torah but many? What that you are not accountable to God?

Who wrote the Bible?

Russ Long — USA (12/28/2010 4:14:38 PM)

Unfortunately the Dead Sea Scroll scribes of 2000 years ago weren't as careful or mindful as the current scribe interviewed by Simcha when transcribing Biblical texts. "The Biblical Dead Sea Scrolls manuscripts are also important because they reflect tolerance for a variety of textual variants. This period was marked by what scholars call textual fluidity. The Qumranites didn’t much care if one text was exactly like another." The Dead Sea Scrolls-What They Really Say by Hershel Shanks

ajgold — usa (12/27/2010 12:07:54 PM)

language on wall of cave and torah are not the same-what language existed for moses at time of writing torah? how complete was language for Moses' time? these questions, left unanswered leave major gap in theory you are promoting.

Naked Archaeologist

Matthew — United States (11/30/2010 7:22:38 PM)

This documentary is crap. Any responsible archaeologist understands that one never sets out to PROVE anything. One just lets the facts speak for themselves. And THE FACTS indicate that Moses did not write the Torah. Scholars have understood this for centuries. This guy is a nutcase. Hes the same idiot who claimed to have found Jesus' tomb. He was made a fool of by William Dever during a debate about the Jesus Tomb.

Who wrote the Bible

Dennis Studd — England (11/30/2010 3:04:12 PM)

Text on a cave wall does not prove that Moses wrote the torah; how can anyone prove that the text was written by Jews anyway? it might have been written by Canaanite or Mesopotamian people. Abraham is thought to have come from Sumaria, and writing had already been developed when he left to move to Canaan 2000 - 1800 BC

Simcha is entertaining and somewhat informative without all the drivel of most tv shows. Sure, some of it is controversial, but so is life. I enjoy Naked Archeologist.

JBeck — USA (11/26/2010 8:08:02 PM)

That was perhaps the worst representation of the documentary hypothesis imaginable, coupled with the biggest bait and switch reasoning next to that employed by Michael Moore. Does BAR actually publish such nonsensical, illogical, journalistic rubbish? If so, count me out. You do realize his petty tactic: Take an argument of 200 points. Pick any two of your choice and using your own standards, interpret them false. Therefore, your own 200 point argument is true???

Totally Hypothetical?

Jonathan Langston Criswell — (11/26/2010 8:54:16 AM)

P.S. The J & E Creation stories have two different orders of creation of plants, animals, and man. Grow up, people, and read some of the good exemplars of those who disagree with you.

• • • • • • •

Purely Hypothetical?

Jonathan Langston Criswell — (11/26/2010 8:50:48 AM)

Disbelievers of the D. H. usually have not read works like Friedman's "Who Wrote the Bible." Apparently Simcha hasn't, despite the episode title. Why does Deu. provide for 1 place of sacrifice, but Ex. gives instructions to make your own altar? Why does the Flood story keep reversing itself on matters of fact? 2 creations of man? Even finding a Deu. and a Nu. passage on 1 artifact does not prove they were together then. He misses 6 known errors in the Is. DSS, and it is the most accurate.

THE NAKED ARCHAEOLOGIST

Robert — USA (11/26/2010 1:38:14 AM)

I have listened to Simcha several times, good points; humorous, lighthearted, good presentation. Bad points: Inaccurate information is dispensed with zeal, lacking in Biblical scholarship. Good for a laugh but not much else. Insisted that David used a sling shot not a slingקלע qela‛ is a sling not a sling shot.

Jacobovici needs to take a basic Bible course

Bob Mullins — (11/26/2010 1:00:12 AM)

I watched this because I hoped it would be useful for my students. I instead found it to be embarrassingly ignorant and a waste of time. Here's a question for Jacobovici: If Moses wrote the Pentateuch, why is the language and idiom of Deuteronomy so different from what Moses wrote in Exodus and so similar to that found hundreds of years later in 2 Kings? Just this question alone ought to make one aware that the issue is more complex than he wants us to believe.

I would have loved to see and hear the thoughts of those who were in disagreement with the Naked Archaeologist when presented with his evidence. Did they continue in disbelief as did the Pharasees of old or repent?
