Who Wrote the DSSI was flabbergasted by the reasoning behind the conclusion this program drew - that, yes, an Essene presence at Qumran was "reconfirmed" by the presence of a latrine some distance to the northwest. This ignores other evidence regarding ancient Jewish practice (check the Bible, for instance) as well as the design of the latrine itself. Even if correct, how would Essene presence "prove" that Essenes wrote the scrolls? • • • • • • • James Tabor LectureRegarding latrines at Qumran, our Sifting History DVD features a lecture by James Tabor on this subject: http://store.bib-arch.org/Sifting-History/productinfo/9HLS7/ • • • • • • • Qumran LatrinesChris and others. The inhabitants of Qumran used the area just NW of the camp for several hundred years. Subsequent soil tests of that area and other control areas revealed ancient feces deposits in high levels. You can find a summary on my Blog: jamestabor.com/blog or see Joe Zias, James Tabor, and Stephanie Harter-Laiheugue, is a journal article ” Toilets at Qumran, the Essenes, and the Scrolls, New Anthropological Data and Old Theory” in Revue de Qumran 22:4 (2006): 631-640. • • • • • • • matching details don't lieSimcha and Tabor recall the account of Josephus and the latrines and eating habits of the Essenes on the night of the Sabbath. They find matching circumstances at Qumran. What honestly are the odds of such an exact match? I saw Simcha's 2 hour show on the Exodus as well and I think he does great work and finds many good points because he searches for the truth without prejudice. Some find that too hard to do. But good results only come from proper motivation and method. Simcha scores! • • • • • • • Pointless ShowToilets? Seriously? Any tour group, bedouin, or IDF soldier could have arranged those stones into a semi-rectangular shape. There are a lot of reasons to connect the Essenes with the scrolls, but this is not one of them. This is utter foolishness. • • • • • • • Thanks, but no thanksWhat? Wasn't Simcha the same guy who, along with Cameron, produced a "documentary" that "proved statistically" they found Jesus' (and Joseph's, James' and Mariamne's) ossuary? I don't think so. The guy has a credibility gap. -Theo • • • • • • • |
