Busy ScheduleI handle the schedules and assignments in our group. Many times the "Junior Man" (or woman) in our group has to work over weekends and holidays but that is OK. We also like to have a couple of "Ready Reserves" waiting in the wings to help out in case there is a scheduling conflict or we need to move equipment. There is always a "CN" (Company Need) when it comes to scheduling. I am just glad that dedication to the team ALWAYS trumps Quality of Life in our group. Keep those cell phones turned on! • • • • • • • VOTE #16!!!Go #16! I can tell she's excited with her find. VOTE FOR #16!!!! • • • • • • • Total CompensationI realize most of these kids don't make a lot of money but when it comes down to it you've got to look at the "Total Compensation" of participating in a dig. The "Total Compensation" includes much more than how much money one brings home every month. We've had some folks from our group who were recently in France looking at some "Buses" as we look at possible ""Growth" opportunities in our group. Now that is something to get excited about. May the best man (or woman) make the cover. • • • • • • • Deal Em an Ace!Or should I just say these are all aces in my mind....although I am still trying to decide which I like best I am inclined to go with the group picture. A wise man once said if you can get 99 worker output for the same as 50 you are on to something. Like the earlier gentleman said there are so many "worker bees" in our field who consistently produce more "widgets" than anybody else...it really is remarkable. Keep up the good work everybody. I am anxious to see who wins! - Brad Holt • • • • • • • Doing More With LessI think all of these potential covers are great! I think it is important to recognize all of the individuals who are willing to dedicate themselves for the good of the "dig" so to speak. I wish I had a way to "rave" for these individuals not just in our special segment but to let all people know the great work going on here. These people aren't paid the highest in any industry but it is a labor of love and in many ways its best that way. To all who "dig" I commend you! • • • • • • • Magazine CoverI would like to say there are many good choices here. I wholeheartedly disagree with RevGreg who feels a woman should not be on the cover because she is beautiful. These woman are all dressed appropriately and to discount their abilities as not looking "scholarly" enough is pure nonsense. This is a short sited view and I dissagree. The "pick ax" is a nice silhoutte I agree but I prefer to see a face where I can actually identify with an actual human being exploring Gods great earth. • • • • • • • scandal!2005 hands down. I laughed and laughed when it was new. I'm still laughing. As Walt Kelly said through his character Porky Pine, "Don't take life too serious. It ain't nohow permanent." • • • • • • • I like artMost of the covers are pretty good, but I like the cover with the silhouetted pick axe guy. It looks like a work of art, while the others look like, "hello, I'm here digging in the dirt =D". • • • • • • • huh?I defend the faith on the internet and various venues. Today with all the misinformation that is on the net we need the publication to look as scholarly as possible. I like pretty girls as much as the next man , but they don't belong on a scientific magazine that covers a field that must bring the highest creditably to the table. So I voted for the pick ax in the sun National Geographic type cover. • • • • • • • Pick Axe in the SunI agree with Timothy. The pick axe silhouette is truly inspiring. The picture highlights the wonder of God while the digger is humbled • • • • • • • Halo diggerThe Halo around the man with the pick axe fills my heart with Jesus. I truly feel that the Son has returned unto us with this marvelous picture that God himself would vote for. • • • • • • • A&A <3 YouGo James!! • • • • • • • Sweating for JesusThat pick-axe shot is truly a sight to behold! I can almost see God's hands embracing the man's shoulders from behind him, nudging him back and forth, coaxing him to work harder and harder. • • • • • • • Pick axe in the sunI was truly inspired by the pick axe in the sun photo cover. It is surely god himself pouring sunshine down unto the brave and noble diggers. • • • • • • • Attractive nerds are fun!I vote for the '09 issue as the young woman on the cover is super, ultra, fantastically beautiful. I cannot pretend to have a better or more respectable reason than this. However, I am sure that this girl is as intelligent and interesting as well. Apparently, I'm going to have to volunteer for a dig to meet a girl of quality. How about a tasteful, appropriately-attired centerfold for the next issue? Thanks, BAR for allowing a little silliness once in a while. Pretty geeks are cool! • • • • • • • Cover #20I have studied Biblical Hebrew and Koine Greek with Nicki Wheeler and have seen her zealousness for ancient languages, archaeology, and the use of both to draw nearer to and to glorify G-d. She embodies a passion for biblical archaeology that makes her an ideal choice for the next dig issue cover! • • • • • • • Nikki ROCKSNikki is outstanding. Look at that concentration and focus. The determination to explore and find the true facts. That is what BAS is all about. YOU GO GIRL!!! • • • • • • • dig coverI voted for the cover with the most people on it because for any dig to be successful, it takes a lot of willing hands, not star power, not good looks. Besides, all those folks will want to buy the magazine then, so they can point themselves out to their kinfolks. "That's me, Granny!" • • • • • • • NickiI've worked on a 14th century Jerome Vulgate with Ms. Wheeler and she is a truly passionate scholar. An aspiring professional in the archaeological field there is no reason to not vote for her. Go cover #20. Go Nicki ! We love you! • • • • • • • seriously......obviously this guy cover #15 has some type of networking going on to win. It's probably the worst cover out of the whole bunch. It looks like someone found something random on trip and is carelessly carrying it around. • • • • • • • The Worst OneThe 2003 cover (#14 counting left-to-right, top-to-bottom) of the curator repairing the unprovenanced ossuary. What was the editor thinking??!! That would be a great cover for an "anti-dig" issue. The 2nd worst is 2008 (#19). Nice photo, but looks too violent/unscientific. I know it's common practice to break up the top soil like that, but I can just hear the sound of the pick crashing into some delicate pottery just below the surface, then exclaiming an expletive after the damage is done. • • • • • • • Dig CoversI am a volunteer in Underwater Archaeology. All the covers are great. I just lean toward my passion. • • • • • • • hawassHow is the kid carelessly contaminating the artifact with his ungloved sweaty hands a good cover?! Vote for #20 - much better archaeological protocol! • • • • • • • cover contestI like #9 - the look of happiness on the face of the volunteer is what we all want to be feeling if we are out there digging... I have volunteered in Israel for a dig (1996) through BAR and that is the look I had plastered on my face the entire time! • • • • • • • The Hardest PartMy choices are 86, 87, 98, 05, 07, 09. Since the majority of other commentators have chosen Miss '87, I'm going to go with the crowd for once. She's exceptionally beautiful (the obvious purpose of these covers is to get/hold/attract people's attention)! The 1986 group photo on the Stepped Stone structure is terrific, but mostly for people who already know what it is; I doubt it attracted any newcomer's attention. Whichever cover wins, I hope BAS will provide updates on them!! • • • • • • • Voting for Nicki WheelerI encourage all archaeologists and aspiring archaeologists to vote for cover #20. Reasoning for this is that Ms. Wheeler is not only an excellent pier, she is also one of the most dedicated Biblical Archaeologists that I have ever met. Yes, she enjoys getting dirty while digging but she is even more passionate about incorporating the sites she has visited to proving the reliability of the Bible. For this reason, I encourage you all to support Nicki by voting for #20. • • • • • • • Scandalous Dig CoversI looked real hard for the scandalous ones...I just picked one with a fully clothed and nice looking young lady since I couldn't find any scandal! • • • • • • • cover vote#2 is likely the best. Studying #2 for a few minutes led me to believe the dig site must have a manicurist on staff. How else could those nails be so perfect while digging and scrapping under the harsh desert conditions and searing sun of the Middle East. By the way, I searched in vain for the "Scandalous" cover, but alas, it must have been deleted out of respect for the easily offended. • • • • • • • Dig CoversAll the covers were good. Not easy to choose but #2 is my favorite. • • • • • • • coversI like the first cover best--not only is it a well-composed photograph, but it also shows how many volunteers it takes to carry on archaeological excavations, and thus highlights how important their participation is to archaeology. • • • • • • • |
